UN Builds Shared Tech Platform to End Agency Silos and Stretch Humanitarian Dollars

The United Nations is betting that breaking down its own technology silos can free up hundreds of millions of dollars for frontline humanitarian work — and the first results are in. At a side event during the 81st UN General Assembly on Sept. 21, senior officials and a top Microsoft executive unveiled tangible progress on the UN80 Technology Accelerator Platform, a sweeping effort to consolidate $2.5 billion in fragmented annual IT spending across more than 30 agencies.

The basics: The UN80 Technology Work Package, co-led by the International Telecommunications Union and UNDP, surveyed roughly 1,000 teams across more than 30 UN organizations and found a system drowning in duplication. The result is the Technology Accelerator Platform — a suite of shared tools spanning data, expertise, beneficiary identification, cybersecurity and AI.
