The United Nations used a side event at the 81st General Assembly to unveil its System Data Commons — a single portal at data.un.org that pools authoritative statistics from 26 agencies into a searchable, AI-ready platform. The move is a direct response to a striking finding: when asked the same statistical question twice, leading AI chatbots return different answers half the time.
- 26 UN agencies pool public data into a single searchable portal at data.un.org, with plans to onboard 50+
- UNICEF benchmark finds AI chatbots give inconsistent statistics 50% of the time across 133,000 test queries
- Platform offers machine-readable endpoints for AI agents, including Model Context Protocol, API and SDMX interfaces built on Google's open-source technology
- Google engineer builds two analytical dashboards in under an hour using a coding agent connected to the UN Data Commons
The UN system produces some of the most-cited statistics on earth — child mortality, labor markets, maternal health, food security. Until now, finding those numbers meant navigating dozens of separate agency websites, each with its own search logic and data formats. The new UN System Data Commons, built under the broader UN80 reform initiative, aims to end that fragmentation.
