SF Bay Ferry is moving to plug in. On Aug. 3, 2026, the agency's Board of Directors unanimously approved a three-agency agreement for a fully funded $6.8M electrification project at the Treasure Island terminal, with the first all-electric vessel targeted for July 2027. The vote came as the agency posted record ridership and its lobbyist warned that state air regulators could pull $1.5 billion to $2 billion a year from the cap-and-invest fund that supports transit.
- Treasure Island electrification deal approved 5-0, setting up the Bay Area's first electric ferry terminal
- Directors pressed staff on evening hours, a $3 toll assumption and a 7% contingency
- State cap-and-invest cuts threaten transit grants before the legislature adjourns Aug. 31
- Ridership hits 3.25 million in fiscal 2026, more than 200,000 above projection
- $2.3M dredging contract awarded after PCB-contaminated sediment doubled the low bid
- Executive Director Seamus Murphy gets 5% raise to $367,800, term extended to 2031
Why it matters: The project would deliver the region's first electrified ferry terminal and service. It also commits SF Bay Ferry to long-term ownership of new charging equipment on an island planned for 8,000 homes.
