County School Board Rewrites Goals, Narrows Mission at Governance Retreat

The Contra Costa County Board of Education used a Sept. 9, 2026, special retreat to rewrite how it describes its own job. Trustees reached consensus, without a formal vote, on draft edits that cut aspirational language from their goals, recast their oversight of the County Office of Education's Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP), and dropped charter school and LCAP references from the mission. The session ended with a sharp exchange over lateness and eating at the dais, which exposed disagreement over who is responsible for keeping order.
