Contra Costa's half-cent transportation sales tax, Measure J, expires in 2034. Its replacement must win 67% of the vote, a bar two earlier attempts missed. At its May 27, 2026, meeting, the Contra Costa Transportation Authority's Citizens Advisory Committee heard the agency's plan for a November 2028 ballot measure and was named its first set of "ambassadors." Members also reviewed the long-range plans that will feed that measure.
- November 2028 ballot targeted for a Measure J renewal needing 67% of the vote
- Executive Director Tim Hale warns of transit cuts and longer commutes if the tax lapses
- CTP 2050 draft lists about 1,200 projects and about $22 billion in need, with board review in July
- Equity-focused CBTP ranks about 100 projects, but staff estimate as few as 10% of 2021 projects were built
- Members flag gaps in West County representation and in San Pablo Avenue bus service
Why it matters: Measure J funds local paving, paratransit, school buses and major highway projects. Without a renewal, that money stops after 2034.
